Cooling-pond blowdown-line failure and repair

A July 2012 blowdown-line rupture released an indeterminate amount of cooling-pond water before isolation. Sampling showed pH 7.87 and total residual chlorine 0.09 ppm within permit limits; the line was replaced, returned to service July 20, 2012, and the report concluded there was no significant environmental effect.

NPDES discharge configuration and flow

The permit identifies primary Outfall 001 as cooling-pond blowdown to the Illinois River and Outfall 002 as Illinois River makeup-water intake-screen backwash. Internal discharge points include demineralizer regenerant, sewage-treatment effluent, wastewater-treatment effluent, cooling-water screen backwash, radwaste-treatment effluent, auxiliary cooling/flushing water, stormwater, and reverse-osmosis reject/filter backwash. Average cooling-pond blowdown from Outfall 001 is approximately 34.98 MGD.
