Covington Facility
Covington Facility (EIA plant 50900; FERC cogeneration docket 83-45-001) is a 160.9 MW industrial combined-heat-and-power plant operated by WestRock Corp in Covington, Virginia. The facility consists of four steam-turbine generators: GEN3 (10.5 MW conventional steam coal, operating since January 1951); GEN4 (34 MW wood/wood-waste biomass, operating since September 1980); GEN5 (34 MW conventional steam coal, operating since September 1989); and GEN7 (82.4 MW wood/wood-waste biomass, operating since November 2013). The plant supplies electricity and process steam to the integrated Covington paperboard mill, which is described as North America's largest bleached paperboard mill and has operated continuously since 1899. Annual generation reported is 782.7 GWh, with fuel types including black liquor (45.0%), natural gas (22.0%), wood/wood-waste solids (21.0%), and bituminous coal (11.6%).
