Gavins Point
Gavins Point Dam is a federal hydroelectric project on the Missouri River, straddling Cedar County, Nebraska and Yankton County, South Dakota, just upstream of Yankton, SD. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1952 and 1957 as the farthest-downstream of the six Pick-Sloan mainstem dams, its powerhouse holds three Kaplan turbine-generators that entered service in 1956-57 with a combined nameplate of 132.3 MW (about 102 MW net summer capacity). The Corps of Engineers' Omaha District owns and operates the dam and powerhouse, and the electricity it produces is marketed wholesale by the Western Area Power Administration rather than sold directly by the Corps. All three units remain in normal operation, with no retirement scheduled; the Corps performs rotating annual maintenance on one unit at a time each fall and winter.
