Fort Randall
Fort Randall Dam is a federally owned hydroelectric plant on the Missouri River near Pickstown, South Dakota, built and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Pick–Sloan Missouri River program. The Corps and contractor Voith Hydro began a roughly $150 million, multi-year rehabilitation in 2025 that will replace all eight turbine-generators, temporarily taking units out of service one at a time while the dam keeps generating; the work is expected to run into 2031 and to lift total plant capacity from about 320 MW to roughly 400 MW once complete. No whole-plant or permanent unit retirement is scheduled — the project is an upgrade, not a closure, and the dam is expected to keep operating for decades afterward. Fort Randall also impounds Lake Francis Case, the reservoir behind the 2-mile-long earthen dam, and provides flood control, navigation and recreation benefits in addition to power.
