Westar Energy completed its purchase of Aquila, Inc.'s 8% leasehold interest in Jeffrey Energy Center for $22.3 million (per 2007 10-Q; 2007 10-K cites $25.8 million). Westar assumed the related lease obligations of approximately $98.5–$118.5 million with lease expiration January 3, 2019. This increased Westar's total interest to 92%.
Westar settled a Department of Justice lawsuit filed on behalf of the EPA. The settlement required installation of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system on one Jeffrey Energy Center unit by end of 2014 (estimated cost approximately $230 million) and less-expensive NOx-reduction equipment on the other two units, also planned for completion in 2014.
Full-scale constructed wetland wastewater treatment system completed at Jeffrey Energy Center. System treats 100% of FGD scrubber wastewater, providing sulfate removal in traditional plant treatment followed by metals removal in wetland, with treated water returned to plant for reuse. Evergy received the 2014 Edison Award for this engineering achievement. FGD systems on all three units were rebuilt and upgraded, achieving 97% reduction in sulfur-dioxide emissions.
