Libby
Libby Dam is a conventional hydroelectric power plant in Lincoln County, Montana, with four operating turbine-generator units totaling 420 megawatts of nameplate capacity. The dam sits on the Kootenai River about seventeen miles upstream of the town of Libby and was dedicated on August 24, 1975 as the fourth dam built under the U.S.-Canada Columbia River Treaty. It is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Seattle District, part of the Corps' Northwestern Division, and its output is marketed by the Bonneville Power Administration into the BPA balancing area. The powerhouse was built with room for additional units, and the Corps is currently installing a sixth generator, assembled largely from components warehoused since the 1980s, that is expected to enter service around September 2027 and add about 120 MW of capacity. There is no scheduled retirement for the plant; it continues to serve flood-risk management, power generation, and Kootenai River sturgeon and temperature-management purposes as part of the Federal Columbia River Power System.
