Mountaineer Wind Energy Center
Mountaineer Wind Energy Center is a 66 MW onshore wind facility in Tucker County, West Virginia, built as a single EIA-reported generating unit that has been operating since December 2002. The site comprises 44 NEG Micon 1.5 MW turbines strung along Backbone Mountain, and it was the first wind farm built in West Virginia and, when it opened, the largest east of the Mississippi River. The project was developed and originally operated by FPL Energy, whose parent later rebranded as NextEra Energy Resources, before Sequitur Renewables, LLC — a portfolio company of ArcLight Capital Partners — acquired it in 2022 along with other operating wind farms in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Sequitur Renewables now owns and operates Mountaineer as part of a five-farm Mid-Atlantic wind platform totaling roughly 185 MW. The plant sells its output into the PJM market, settling near the William 138 kV point of interconnection in Thomas, Tucker County. No unit retirements or plant-wide closure date are on file for Mountaineer.
