Robert Moses Niagara
Robert Moses Niagara is a conventional hydroelectric generating facility owned and operated by the New York Power Authority, located in Lewiston, New York, 4.5 miles downstream from Niagara Falls. The plant comprises 13 Francis turbine-generator units with a total nameplate capacity of 2,429.1 MW. It diverts water from the Niagara River through a gated tunnel into reservoirs, with water then flowing through 485-foot penstocks to the turbines before discharge back to the Niagara River. The facility is part of NYPA's larger Niagara Power Project, which also includes the separate Lewiston Pump Generating Plant. Robert Moses Niagara achieved first power in 1961 and was the largest hydropower facility in the Western world at that time. The plant operates under a federal hydroelectric license (FERC Project P-2216) renewed in 2007 for a 50-year term. The plant supplies approximately 10% of New York State's electricity to state facilities, municipal and rural electric cooperatives, and large utilities.
