TransAlta Centralia is a 729.9 MW conventional steam coal plant in Lewis County, Washington. TransAlta Centralia Generation LLC, a subsidiary of Calgary-based TransAlta Corporation, owns and operates the plant's single remaining generator, Unit 2. TransAlta retired the plant's original Unit 1, a 670 MW boiler, at the end of 2020 under a 2011 Washington law that also required Unit 2 to stop burning coal by the end of 2025. Unit 2's coal-fired retirement date passed on schedule, but the U.S. Separately, TransAlta and Puget Sound Energy signed a tolling agreement in December 2025 to convert Unit 2 from coal to a 700 MW natural-gas facility that would operate under contract until 2044, with commercial gas operation targeted for late 2028.
