Walter C Beckjord
Walter C. Beckjord is a 4-megawatt battery-storage facility in Clermont County, Ohio, made up of two 2-MW lithium-ion units. The site was originally the six-unit, 862-MW Walter C. Beckjord coal-fired plant plus four oil-fired combustion turbines, which Duke Energy Ohio retired in stages, with the last coal units and the turbines shut down in 2014. In 2015 Duke Energy built the two lithium-ion battery systems on the former coal-plant footprint, using the existing grid interconnection to sell frequency-regulation service into PJM. When Duke Energy and joint owners AEP and Dayton Power & Light sold the retired coal plant and surrounding land to Commercial Liability Partners in 2018 for brownfield redevelopment, Duke Energy Renewables kept ownership of the two battery units and the nearby transmission substation and switchyard. The facility settles in PJM and its own generating-station price node sits at the site.
