BRESCO is a 64.5 MW municipal solid waste power plant in Baltimore City, Maryland, made up of two waste-to-energy generating units that have operated since 1984 and 2001. Opened in 1985, the incinerator's tall smokestack along Interstate 95 is a well-known Baltimore landmark and burns roughly 700,000 tons of trash a year for the city and surrounding counties. BRESCO remains Baltimore's largest single stationary source of air pollution and continues to draw sustained opposition from community and environmental groups over its emissions and ash disposal.
