SPP publishes a point forecast with no confidence interval. Error grows sharply with lead time across a footprint this long, and a frontal passage mistimed by two hours is the dominant failure mode.
SPP publishes its wind forecast twice: a five-minute short-term run that reaches about four hours, and an hourly mid-term run that reaches a full week. This page plots the mid-term one against what the fleet actually delivered, because the question a week-ahead reader is asking is not the question a dispatcher four hours out is asking.
SPP's footprint sits on the spine of the US wind belt, from the Dakotas to the Texas Panhandle. Wind is routinely the largest source on the system and has served over 60% of load at times — records no other US market approaches. When the wind forecast moves, everything downstream moves: commitment, congestion, prices at both hubs.
