CPV Backbone Solar
CPV Backbone Solar is a 175 MW solar photovoltaic facility located in Garrett County, Maryland on a reclaimed, decommissioned coal-mine site. The project entity is CPV Backbone Solar, LLC. Its initial 160 MWac phase began commercial operations on December 22, 2025, making it Maryland's largest solar project at the time of operation. An adjacent second phase (Backbone Solar Part 2), adding up to 38.14 MWdc, is under construction and is projected to bring the facility's total installed capacity to approximately 175 MWac by 2027. The facility uses 324,000 solar panels and is designed to power approximately 30,000 homes while avoiding more than 200,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. It interconnects at 138 kV to the Potomac Edison grid via the existing Albright–Mt. Zion transmission line.
