John P Madgett
John P. Madgett Station is a 387 MW conventional steam coal-fired power plant in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, consisting of a single generating unit that entered commercial operation in November 1979. John P. Madgett Station sits along the Mississippi River in Alma, Wisconsin, where it is part of Dairyland Power Cooperative's "Alma site," alongside the now-demolished Alma Station. John P. Madgett Station is named after John P. Madgett, who served as Dairyland's general manager from 1947 to 1978. In 2024, Dairyland Power Cooperative said that under the EPA's new power-plant carbon rule its only option would have been to retire John P. Madgett Station by 2032, since carbon capture was not technically feasible there and no natural-gas pipeline serves Alma for co-firing. In September 2026, however, the EPA finalized a repeal of the 2024 rule's carbon-capture-based standards for existing coal units, eliminating the compliance driver that had targeted a 2032 closure of the plant. John P. Madgett Station has also added pollution-control equipment over the past two decades, including a baghouse in 2007, dry sorbent and activated carbon injection systems in 2014, and a selective catalytic reduction system for nitrogen oxides that has run since 2016. John P. Madgett Station sells its output into the MISO market and settles at the DPC.JPM pricing node located at the plant.
