F B Culley
F.B. Culley Generating Station is a coal-fired power plant on the north bank of the Ohio River in Warrick County, Indiana, near Newburgh. It runs two operating boiler units with a combined nameplate capacity of 368.9 MW: the 103.7 MW Unit 2, in service since December 1966, and the 265.2 MW Unit 3, in service since June 1973. The plant is owned and operated by CenterPoint Energy (formerly Vectren/Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Co.) and settles into the MISO market near its own bus. CenterPoint's resource plans have repeatedly called for retiring Unit 2, most recently by the end of 2025, but the U.S. Department of Energy has invoked emergency Federal Power Act Section 202(c) authority four times since December 2025 to keep the unit running for grid reliability; the latest order, issued September 18, 2026, requires Unit 2 to stay available through December 18, 2026. CenterPoint intends to eventually repurpose the Unit 2 interconnection for a 90 MW battery-storage project as soon as 2028, while Unit 3's long-term future is to be reassessed in the company's next integrated resource plan.
