Leland Olds
Leland Olds Station is a two-unit lignite-fired conventional steam-electric generating station located near Stanton in Mercer County, North Dakota. Basin Electric Power Cooperative owns and operates 100% of the facility. Unit 1 was commissioned on January 9, 1966, with a 220-MW rating, making it at the time the largest lignite-fired power plant in the Western Hemisphere. The plant uses Missouri River water for cooling and receives lignite coal through Dakota Coal Company from the Freedom Mine operated by The Coteau Properties Company. The station was the first mine-mouth power plant in the region. Current EIA nameplate capacity is 656 MW across both units. Environmental controls include wet-limestone scrubbers commissioned in 2012 (Unit 2) and 2013 (Unit 1) for sulfur-dioxide reduction, and selective non-catalytic reduction systems commissioned in April 2017 for nitrogen-oxide control.
