Weston
Weston Power Plant is a coal-fired power station in the villages of Rothschild and Kronenwetter, Marathon County, Wisconsin, along the Wisconsin River near Wausau. It currently has two operating units, Unit 3 (350.5 MW, online since 1981) and Unit 4 (595 MW, online since 2008), for a combined nameplate capacity of 945.5 MW. Unit 4 is jointly owned, with Wisconsin Public Service Corporation (WPS) holding 70% and Dairyland Power Cooperative of La Crosse holding 30%; WPS, a subsidiary of WEC Energy Group, operates the entire site. Two older units, Weston 1 and 2, along with two smaller peaking units, were retired in 2015 and 2023 and have since been demolished. WEC Energy Group has announced plans to retire Unit 3 in 2031 and convert Unit 4 to burn natural gas as part of a company-wide exit from coal use by the end of 2032, though the utility has not yet filed the Unit 4 gas-conversion project with Wisconsin regulators and critics note the company's retirement dates have slipped before. The plant sells its output into MISO, settling near the WPS.WESTON3 and WPS.WESTON4 nodes.
