It was created in 2004 by GI Partners from a portfolio of 21 data center assets and went public the same year. It operates more than 300 data centers in 55+ metro areas and is a large buyer of renewable power for its sites.

The company sells wholesale colocation services and data center solutions, and has paired with Blackstone to build hyperscale campuses, with Digital Realty operating and leasing the facilities while Blackstone provides most of the development capital.

- GI Partners created Digital Realty in 2004 by consolidating a portfolio of 21 stand-alone data center assets bought through bankruptcy auctions and from distressed companies, and took the company public that year. In December 2023 Digital Realty and Blackstone announced a joint venture for four hyperscale campuses, with Blackstone taking an 80% ownership stake and making an initial capital contribution of $700M. The campuses are expected to provide around 500 megawatts of capacity, and Digital Realty already owns the land and has secured the power commitments for all four.

It has contracted 1.7 GW of new renewable energy capacity, reports a portfolio Power Usage Effectiveness of 1.38, and certifies major new construction to LEED Silver or equivalent. It has issued $8.5 billion of cumulative green bonds.
