Homer City Generating Station
EIA plant 3122, Homer City Generating Station, is a retired coal-fired facility in Center Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania that began operations in 1969 (Units 1–2) with Unit 3 added in 1977. The three-unit coal station was permanently decommissioned on July 1, 2023, after approximately 54–46 years of operation. The site is being redeveloped by Homer City Redevelopment, LLC into a more than 3,200-acre natural-gas-powered data-center campus. The planned generation consists of seven GE Vernova 7HA.02 combined-cycle turbines (384 MW each, 2,688 MW total) and up to ten Mitsubishi Power FT8 simple-cycle aeroderivative turbines (31 MW each, up to 310 MW total), for a combined planned capacity of approximately 4,396 MW. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued air-quality plan approval on November 18, 2025, authorizing construction and initial operation. Power production is targeted for 2027. The facility is interconnected to PJM Interconnection, L.L.C., the primary market operator, and historically had connections to NYISO; legacy transmission infrastructure and substations are being reused. EIA classifies the planned generators as proposed for installation but with regulatory approvals not yet initiated as of the July 2026 inventory; however, the November 2025 Pennsylvania DEP approval constitutes a major regulatory milestone.
