Monticello Nuclear Facility
Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant is a single-unit boiling-water reactor on the Mississippi River in Wright County, Minnesota, about 40 miles northwest of Minneapolis. It has operated since 1971 and is rated at 685 MW nameplate (617 MW net summer) by EIA-860. The plant is owned by Xcel Energy and operated by its regulated Minnesota utility subsidiary, Northern States Power Co. In December 2024 the NRC renewed its operating license for an additional 20 years, extending authorized operation through September 8, 2050, and Minnesota's Public Utilities Commission approved matching the full life extension through 2050 in February 2025. The plant supplies power to roughly half a million homes in the Upper Midwest and, together with Xcel's Prairie Island plant, provides nearly a quarter of the utility's regional electricity. It settles into the MISO market at the NSP.MNTCEL1 node.
