Sherburne County Generating Plant (Sherco)
Northern States Power Company (Minnesota), d/b/a Xcel Energy - Sherburne County - MISO
Sherburne County Generating Plant, also known as Sherco, is a coal-fired conventional steam generating facility at 13999 Industrial Blvd., Becker, Minnesota, in Sherburne County, operated by Northern States Power Company—Minnesota, doing business as Xcel Energy, within the MISO market footprint. Unit 2 retired at the end of 2023; the remaining active coal Units 1 and 3 have a combined nameplate capacity of approximately 1,704 MW. Unit 3 is jointly owned by Xcel Energy with a 59% interest and Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency with a 41% interest; Xcel operates and maintains the unit. The facility encompasses approximately 1,700 acres and draws water from the Mississippi River. Sherco Solar and a Form Energy battery storage project are being developed at the site as part of Xcel's clean energy transition.
