Narrows Gas Turbines Generating

Astoria Generating Company, L.P. - Kings County - NYISO

Narrows Generating Station is a 322 MW floating power station located in Brooklyn along the east side of Upper New York Bay. The facility consists of 16 simple-cycle combustion-turbine units on two floating power barges moored to a pier in the Bay Ridge Channel. All units are dual-fuel capable, operating primarily on natural gas with distillate fuel oil (ULSD) as backup. The turbines, installed in May 1972, are GE Frame 5N units with approximately 22 MW nameplate capacity each. Sixteen starting engines fueled by ULSD were added in January 1993. The station provides critical peaking capacity, can be started in fifteen minutes, and offers black-start capability for system restoration. NYISO determined that Narrows Units 1 and 2 are needed for New York City Zone J reliability through May 1, 2029.
