Port Jefferson

Port Jefferson Power Station is an operating fossil-fuel-fired peaker power plant located at 700 Beach Street in Port Jefferson, Suffolk County, New York. The facility consists of five generating units totaling approximately 498 MW of nameplate capacity: two 188 MW natural-gas/residual-fuel-oil steam turbines commissioned in November 1958 and November 1960 respectively; one 16 MW distillate-fuel-oil combustion turbine commissioned in December 1966; and two 53 MW natural-gas/distillate-fuel-oil combustion turbines commissioned in July 2002 as the Port Jefferson Energy Center. The plant is owned and operated by National Grid Generation LLC and supplies capacity, energy conversion, and ancillary services to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) under long-term contractual arrangements. Natural gas is the primary fuel with residual and distillate fuel oil serving as backup. The facility generates approximately 416.1 GWh annually and is part of a critical generation portfolio serving approximately two million people on Long Island.
