Clinch River
Clinch River is a 475 MW natural-gas steam-turbine electric utility power plant located in Russell County, Virginia. The facility began operation in December 1958 as a coal-fired steam plant. In 2015, Appalachian Power retired the coal-related assets of Units 1 and 2 and retired Unit 3 entirely. Units 1 and 2 began operating as natural-gas-fired units in 2016. The plant currently operates two generators, each with 237.5 MW of nameplate capacity (230 MW summer, 235 MW winter). It is owned and operated by Appalachian Power Co and is located within the PJM balancing area, connected at 138 kV. The plant is supplied natural gas by the East Tennessee Natural Gas pipeline system, owned by Enbridge Inc.
