Softer load favors discounts to Hub Average's $59.86/MWh cleared peak
Saturday, Oct 17, 2026 · ERCOT data as of 8:00 AM CDT
Issue of Oct 17 · generated 8:15 AM CTLatest
A slight Hub Average discount to cleared day-ahead looks more likely during 7-10 PM CDT, given lower load forecasts and the model; an average premium above $10.00/MWh would break the call.
What changed since the last issue#
Hub Average has a slight discount lean tonight despite its 8 AM-midnight CDT cleared average rising from $14.21/MWh for Oct 16 to $27.91/MWh for Oct 17. Oct 16's 7-10 PM CDT premium averaged $6.21/MWh, below the $10.00/MWh watch but against yesterday's discount lean; West's separation watch also missed, weakening the case for carrying that regional concern forward.
From the last issue's watch list#
- Not met: ERCOT Hub Average real time over day-ahead averaging above $10.00/MWh, Oct 16, 7 to 10 PM (averaged $6.21).
- Not met: West Hub real time over day-ahead beyond the typical hub below -$20.00/MWh, Oct 16, 4 to 10 PM (low of -$0.64, 9 PM).

Lower demand favors a modest evening discount#
The Oct 17, 7-10 PM CDT Hub Average curve looks slightly rich. Metis 1 Preview puts its middle price for 7 PM CDT at $51.27/MWh, $8.59/MWh under that hour's $59.86/MWh cleared benchmark. For today's delivery hours, the forecast peak was cut 2,637 MW to 50,004 MW at 6 PM CDT.
Oct 17's midnight-8 AM CDT Hub Average price averaged $41.82/MWh, versus North's $44.53/MWh and South's $32.52/MWh. The latest published hourly load reading was 42,747 MW for the hour beginning 5 AM CDT.
Wind delivery can overturn the evening lean#
Wind underdelivery would weaken that discount lean. For Oct 17, 7-9 PM CDT, the published wind path averages 3,051 MW; with 25,379 MW of forecast generation outages at issuance, delivery is the risk to follow. The Oct 16, 10 AM CDT wind reading trailed the wind forecast available before day-ahead closed by 7,516 MW.
Separately, physical responsive capability fell 6,025 MW to 7,074 MW by 7:57 AM CDT. Taylor County's unsolved-contingency manual action cycled through an 11:18 AM CDT cancellation, 2:11 PM CDT reissuance and 6:10 PM CDT cancellation on Oct 16. What to watch today#
- Hub Average real-time minus cleared day-ahead averaging above $10.00/MWh during Oct 17, 7-10 PM CDT would break the discount call and prompt reserve and wind review.
- ERCOT wind averaging below 2,000 MW during Oct 17, 7-9 PM CDT, versus 3,051 MW forecast, would weaken the discount lean and prompt reserve review.
