Overview

One row per day, measure (heating or cooling), weighting, region_set and region. weighting is population, or utility_gas for heating degree days weighted by homes that heat with utility gas, the standard weather proxy for residential and commercial gas demand. region_set is census_division (the nine divisions by name, plus CONUS) or state (two-letter codes, population-weighted). Compare a period with the same period in earlier years; never add degree days across weightings, region sets or measures. Published by NOAA CPC.

Query contract
Preserve one canonical row per (event_time, measure, weighting, region_set, region) before aggregating.
Analysis rules
Read with FINAL; filter one measure, one weighting and one region_set before aggregating.Degree days add over days within one region; average them over regions only with weights.
Interpretation
Degree days measure temperature against 65°F; they are a demand proxy, not gas or power demand.Published by NOAA CPC; attribute it whenever it is reported.
