A load zone is the area ERCOT uses to price the electricity consumed in it. Four are geographic: Houston, North, South and West. Four belong to municipal and cooperative utilities: Austin Energy (AEN), CPS Energy, LCRA and Rayburn (RAYBN). Each zone's price is the load-weighted average of the prices at the buses inside it.
ERCOT also splits Texas into eight weather zones for load forecasting. Some share names with load zones but not boundaries. Prices settle by load zone; demand is forecast by weather zone.
Eight: Houston, North, South and West, plus the Austin Energy, CPS Energy, LCRA and Rayburn zones of the utilities that settle on their own.
Houston, North, South, West and Panhandle, plus the hub average and hub bus average ERCOT publishes beside them. Hubs are trading points; load zones are where consumption settles.
Real time: the latest settlement point price ERCOT has published for each load zone and hub, in $/MWh.
Transmission limits. When power cannot flow freely between regions, the zones on the constrained side price higher, and the spread between zones shows where the grid is tight.
What Ask the Grid's detectors found in ERCOT's published data over the last two weeks, the most material episode of each kind per day.
Binding constraint
SCED could not keep DT PK 91 A within its limit under contingency DBI_GT_8, 3.7 MW past it, so its $3,500/MWh shadow price is ERCOT's shadow price cap rather than the cost of any resource. It has gone unheld for 45 minutes and bound on 20 of the previous 30 days. Since it went unheld, congestion across ERCOT's hubs has averaged $9/MWh wider than the hour before, widest now between South Hub and Panhandle Hub.
Local congestion
Panhandle Hub to West Load Zone spans $112/MWh while LAKENA SAMATH1 1 carries a $2,800/MWh shadow price. It has gone unheld for 15 minutes and bound on 8 of the previous 30 days. Congestion across ERCOT's hubs has not widened since it went unheld.
Spread to a neighbor
ERCOT's HB_HUBAVG is at $104/MWh against $307/MWh at SPP's SPPNORTH_HUB.
